Msgr. Michael Schmitz is the Vicar General of The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. He was born on the 22nd of March 1957 in Germany. He studied at the Gregorian University in Rome and was ordained a priest on October 10, 1982, by His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI.
In this 32 page booklet, based on a talk delivered at the ‘Catholic Voice’ conference in Limerick, in November 2018, Msgr. Schmitz looks at what is meant by a truly Catholic reform, that is, one based on the truths of Scripture, the Magisterium of the Catholic Church and Catholic Dogma.
Whilst not underestimating the importance of the laity and of Catholic families in fostering vocations, he stresses the need for holy priests.
“No one underestimates the importance of the laity in the Church, which partakes, together with the priests, in the graces of the sacraments of initiation, holy Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. We know that many great Saints, and above all our Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph, are lay people. We are proud of so many saintly fathers and mothers who take care of the eternal happiness of their children by a Christian education and the example of a good life based on truth and charity. There would be no priests without these fathers and mothers, without so many good Catholic families that foster vocations to the priesthood and to religious life. The history of the Church reveals to us that lay people have always taken an important place in Holy Church, and, in times of strife and crisis, often a decisive one.
Without the ordinary ministers of the sacraments, however, without the priests of the sacrifice and the administrators of grace and forgiveness, without the preachers of revealed truth, without the defenders of apostolic tradition, without the teachers of Christian culture, the Church could not exist and there would be no sure way to holiness and heaven.”
