The Sino-Vatican Agreement—One Year Later

Underground bishops are being forced to join the Patriotic church, whose leaders are openly saying that their first loyalty is not to God but to the Party-State. No one who follows the persecution of Catholics around the world can have missed what is currently happening in China. Despite the signing of the Sino-Vatican Agreement in September 2018, the persecution of Catholics in that country seems not only to be continuing, but to be intensifying, especially for those who refuse to … Read More

Abortion: The Deceit of the Century

James M Bourke reflects on his new book and explains what motivated him to write a book about the obscenity of abortion. Reflections on the Abortion Issue in Ireland:My monograph, Reflections on the Abortion Issue in Ireland was launched in Limerick on 23rd November, 2019 at the Annual Conference of the Catholic Voice newspaper. It consists of 12 critical essays which tell the story of how abortion was legalised in Ireland. It is not a very edifying story. In fact, … Read More

How to survive the Age of Endarkenment without Eating your Dog

The Pope, abandoning even the slightest pretence at the political impartiality that his office demands, has come dangerously, culpably close to comparing President Trump with King Herod, who was responsible for the Massacre of the Innocents. The Jesuit house journal La Civiltà Cattolica describes itself as “reflecting the mind of the Vatican since 1850”. Last week, in that august if somewhat self-satisfied journal, Fr. Antonio Spadaro SJ reported the Pope as uttering the following words at a meeting with the … Read More

RSE an Attack on Religious Vocations

“Know also this, that, in the last days, shall come dangerous times. Men shall be lovers of themselves, covetous, haughty, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, wicked, Without affection, without peace, slanderers, incontinent, unmerciful, without kindness, Traitors, stubborn, puffed up, and lovers of pleasures more than of God: Having an appearance indeed of godliness, but denying the power thereof. Now these avoid. For of these sort are they who creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, … Read More

There’s Nothing Like A Good Book

This week I would like to mention a few good books. I have just begun reading Bishop Athanasius Schneider’s book, ‘Christus Vincit – Christ’s triumph Over the Darkness of the Age’. The early chapters are a fascinating read and deal with the history of Bishop Schneider’s family. I am struck by the fact that Bishop Schneider was born in April 1961, just eleven months before I was born. I was born in Dublin, about seven and a half thousand miles … Read More

Saint Andrew and his X-Shaped Cross

Saint Andrew whose feast we celebrate on the 30th November was the first of the Twelve Apostles to follow Christ. The Gospels give us precious information about the his life, and Tradition tells us that he travelled and evangelised many regions in the East until eventually laying down his life for Christ in Greece. According to the Gospels, Saint Andrew was a fisherman of Galilee, and brother of Simon Peter.  He was also one of the disciples of Saint John … Read More

The Sin Of Ecocide!

Is it possible to invent a new sin of ‘ecocide’? Pope Francis, following a demand by the Amazon Synod, says he is mulling over whether to insert the novel sin of “ecocide” into the Catechism of the Catholic Church – in short, whether to alter the unalterable teachings of the Faith. His Holiness recently told the International Penal Law Association: “We have to introduce – we are thinking about it – in the Catechism of the Catholic Church the sin … Read More

The Family Rosary

“And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” (Apocalypse 12:1) This week’s article has a personal note to it. I received a call during the week from a man whose wife is in hospital, and we were talking about family life and the inevitable crosses one must bear. Faithful Catholic parents are greatly troubled if any of their children fall … Read More

False Shepherds

“But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be among you lying teachers, who shall bring in sects of perdition, and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction.’  (2 Peter 2:1) We need truth to be able to operate successfully in the world.  This applies most especially to the spiritual side of life, but it also applies to the material and practical sides of life, e.g. in one’s occupation. One needs … Read More

Disinformation and Fake News

On Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th November 2019, an interesting meeting took place in Leinster House. The International Grand Committee (IGC) on Disinformation and ‘Fake News’ met for two days.
