The Sanctuary of the Family

I was asked to speak at a conference in Galway on Saturday 12th January,  2019, hosted by the newly formed Round Tower Association. The conference was on the role of the Catholic family. Dr William Newton, a professor of Theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio, gave an interesting presentation where he interviewed his wife Mrs Claire Newton about Catholic family life under the heading ‘The Family: Building the Sanctuary of Life and Love’. The interview was interspersed with … Read More

Lumen Fidei Institute RSE Submission

The Lumen Fidei Institute has responded to the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment’s request for submissions on Relationships & Sexuality Education in Irish schools. We point out that the Irish government has uncritically accepted the false and unscientific LGBT agenda and now seeks to impose that agenda on Irish school children regardless of the school’s ethos and regardless of parent’s wishes in this matter. As usual, consultation with parents is minimal and arises after the reports have been commissioned. … Read More

Government attacks on Catholic Parents & their Children

A report is being launched today by the Oireachtais Committee on Education & Skills on ‘Relationships & Sexuality Education’ in Irish schools. Media coverage of the report tells us some of what is in the report. The report recommends that all children will be taught about abortion, contraception and all children are to be indoctrinated in the false LGBT ideology regardless of the ethos of the school. This report is the latest move in Government attacks on the rights of … Read More

Marriage According to St Peter

We have seen that ‘Dei Verbum ‘says “the interpreter of Sacred Scripture, in order to see clearly what God wanted to communicate to us, should carefully investigate what meaning the sacred writers really intended, and what God wanted to manifest by means of their words.”  With this in mind let us have alook at St Peter’s thoughts on how Catholic husbands and wives should behave. It is interesting to remember that St Peter himself was married so he speaks from … Read More

Marriage – Scripture – Dei Verbum

Marriage in Scripture Christ, in the Gospels, laid down the essential foundations for marriage without which marriages cannot validly take place. Marriage must be between one man and one woman, they must be open to life and freely co-operate with God in the gift of procreation which is the primary end of marriage. The marriage is for life and no man may put it asunder and those wishing to marry must be free to marry; that is, free from impediment … Read More

Marriage v Virginity

Marriage a gift from God – The Church’s Understanding through Scripture. We have seen how Christ dispensed with the concession permitting divorce which was given by Moses.  We also know that Moses gave this concession on account of the hardness of men’s hearts.  Does this mean that with the arrival of Christ men became softer of heart? The crucifixion clearly shows that men were still very much hard of heart but interestingly, the reaction of the disciples to Christ’s re-establishment … Read More

Marriage in Matthew, Mark & Genesis

Christ nullified the concession of Moses. So far, we have seen that a false notion of marriage has become prevalent throughout western society even amongst Catholics. We have seen in the Gospels how Jesus, in both Matthew 5:31-32 and in Luke 16:18, nullified the concession, given to the people by Moses, which permitted divorce. The Church confirmed this interpretation at both the council of Florence and the Council of Trent therefore any confusion as regards the Church’s position on marriage … Read More

Marriage in Sacred Scripture

First published in ‘The Catholic Voice’, Ireland in December 2013 The Notion of Marriage is Undermined In the first article I noted that western civilisation has collapsed due in no small part to the ongoing collapse of marriage.  The traditional understanding of marriage has been seriously undermined in our society to such an extent that most people in western society, including many if not most, Catholics, now see marriage as a romantic sexual relationship where two people, regardless of sex, … Read More
